Hilary J. Schmidt, PhD, is an advanced education expert with extensive experience in strategic planning and change management within both the pharmaceutical industry and Academic Medical Centers. She is a member of the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions, and served as the Chair of the Industry Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions from 2011-13. She is a nominated member of the Task Force on Industry Provider Collaboration in CME and served as the Annual Meeting Chair for that organization in 2012.

Dr. Schmidt’s most recent position was Vice President for Independent Grants and Learning at Sanofi US, where she led and executed a strategic vision for Independent Medical Education across the therapeutic areas of the company and managed the education grant process. In this role she cultivated high-impact education and ensured full compliance with all external and internal policy and guidelines related to CME/CE.

At Sanofi, she also oversaw internal operations for Investigator Initiated Trials and the Medical Affairs Training function. She was recognized for success in increasing operational efficiency and cultivating highest standards for compliance.

She has a PhD in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania (1985), and has dedicated her professional life to translating research on how people learn into best practices for teaching, learning, and assessment in health science education. She has expertise in cognitive psychology, education research, instructional design, and outcomes assessment.

She established education centers at three different medical schools [Columbia University Medical Center (1994-2004), SUNY-Downstate (1992-1994) and UMDNJ – Newark (1987-1992)], and has presented and published extensively in the field of medical education.

She is now available as a consultant in the areas of health science education, strategic planning, and change management.
